Coeur d’Alene began as Fort Sherman, an Army post established in 1878 on the ground where North Idaho College stands today. It incorporated as a town in 1887 and as a city in 1906, and the 2020 census counted 54,628 residents, about 30 miles east of Spokane.
Life here centers on the lake and the town around it: Tubbs Hill and McEuen Park, the North Idaho Centennial Trail, parades on Sherman Avenue, and North Idaho College on the old fort grounds. Coeur d’Alene Public Schools, District 271, serves most addresses.
